The history of Domaine de Haslach

In the heart of the Munster Valley, between forest and mountains, the Domaine de Haslach bears the imprint of a rich and fascinating history. Witness to over a century of transformations, this site has seen its destiny change over time, from a medical sanatorium to an exceptional green tourism destination.

Origins: A Sanatorium in Alsace

The story of the Domaine began in 1912, when German architect Karl Bonatz designed a vast sanatorium in Haslach, high up in the Munster Valley. Built to meet the needs of the time, the establishment was intended for railway workers suffering from pulmonary tuberculosis. Completed after the First World War, it officially opened in 1924 under the management of the Caisse des Pensions de Chemins de Fer. Three years later, in 1927, the property was sold to the Caisse de Maladie d'Alsace-Lorraine, which financed its completion and operation.

A Cure Center in Full Evolution

Over the years, the establishment adapted to medical needs. In 1972, it expanded its activities and became a cure center, welcoming not only tuberculosis patients, but also those convalescing from various pathologies. It offered 50 convalescent beds and 61 beds for tuberculosis patients. For several decades, it was a major health center in the Ballons des Vosges Regional Nature Park.

In 1991, the nursing home was sold to the SNCF. In 2009, changes in medical practices and the restructuring of healthcare establishments led to a merger with the Loewel hospital in Munster, just 3 km away. This merger marked the beginning of a profound change for Haslach: hospital activity was gradually transferred to Munster, with the aim of integrating infrastructures into a modernized healthcare project. In 2017, following the completion of renovation work on the historic Loewel hospital building, the Haslach sanatorium closes its doors for good.

La Renaissance: A Haven of Tourism and Nature

2018 marks a decisive turning point in the history of the Domaine. Christian Hagenstein, founder of Batibois Alsace, acquired the site with a clear ambition: to transform this former health establishment into an exceptional place dedicated to high-end tourist accommodation.

Over the course of several years of renovation work, the buildings have been redesigned to offer an immersive experience in the heart of nature. Nestled between Colmar and the crests of the Vosges mountains, Domaine de Haslach benefits from an exceptional environment, where grandiose panoramas and emblematic hiking trails such as those of the Linge and Petit Ballon blend together.

In 2025, the Domaine is set to open its doors and welcome its first visitors. With its panoramic apartments, wooden eco-lodges, perched cabins and wellness areas, it embodies a perfect blend of heritage and modernity. Renamed Domaine de Haslach, the former spa turns a new page in its history, ready to reveal the full splendor of Alsace to its guests.
